“Whoever becomes simple and elemental again, like this
child,
will rank high in
God’s kingdom.”Matthew 18:4
MSG
Too many of us have too much to think about,
function on too little sleep, don’t have enough time in the day, and suffer
from sensory overload.Demands for our
attention seem to increase as we speed into our futures.Even as we are “liberated” by modern,
time-saving conveniences, we are at the same time oppressed by higher
expectations and greater demands to achieve, have, and become more. The more efficient we become, the more
productive we must be, right?
We seem to want more and more to complicate
our lives.Our thirsts can seem
unquenchable. But there is a Well that
satisfies.Let’s not forget the
simplicity of the Gospel --- the simple truth found in Christ.Christ is the source of all peace, joy and
true contentment.Seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness --- seek first
his rest.Seek the simplicity found in
Christ.
So I can pray a breath prayer, Help
me keep it simple, when…..
--- I feel like I’m
not achieving all I want to.
--- I’m not satisfied
with my life.
--- I’m bored.
--- I can’t seem to
keep up with my neighbors or colleagues.
--- I’m excited about
a new project in my already busy life.
Help me keep it
simple, Jesus.Amen.
(reprinted from the
Breath Prayers Devotional)
I think summertime is the ideal time to
examine our lives and see where we might have tried to cram way too much into
each day.As life slows a bit, perhaps
that time might give us the opportunity to consider where it is that God is
really calling us to be.I pray you’ll
each have a peaceful, restful and prayerful summer as you consider your place
here in the great vineyard of God’s creation!.
I can’t wait to see
you in worship!!!

THE SPIRIT MOVING – Sermons for Summer, 2011
What in the world is God doing?
As we look at the seemingly random and
chaotic events taking place all the time in this world, that question about God
comes up again and again. If God is in
charge, then what in the world is He doing?
It is a good question to consider during
the Pentecost season in the church year, when we celebrate the movement of
God’s Holy Spirit.
This is probably distant memory now, but
last year during the Easter season, continuing into the Pentecost season, we
began reading the Book of Acts each Sunday, hearing about the powerful
Pentecost Spirit that God unleashed into the church. We read through the conversion of Paul in
Acts 9 before we turned to other things.
This Pentecost season I want to pick up
where we left off, because the Book of Acts is our guide to the Spirit’s
continuing power in the world. It fits
perfectly with our year-long emphasis of sharing our story of faith, and with
our current theme, ‘We’ve a Story to Tell to the Nations.’
What in the world is God doing? It’s quite an amazing list. The Spirit is moving! These are the lessons we’ll cover in the
weeks ahead:
June 19--THE SPIRIT HEALINGActs

Pastoral Transitions
As most of you are aware, effective
July 1st the Bishop and Cabinet of our Annual Conference have
appointed me to an additional appointment. On that date I will become the pastor at the Brewerton
United Methodist
Church on Orangeport Road, as well as continuing my
ministry here at Cicero
United Methodist
Church.Needless to say, this will mean a few
transitions in the lives of both of your pastors! We anticipate some changes in pastoral
responsibilities at that time as well.My title of Associate Pastor will be combined with the new title of
Business Administrator and I will move into team and ministry roles that are
less dependent on my Sunday morning presence. So the new team and ministry responsibilities will begin to look like:
Everett ---Care Team Areas, Worship Planning,
Nominations, SPRC, Futures, Evangelism
The process of developing these
roles will be an ongoing one.We will
“live into it” and as I have mentioned to some of you during the last couple of
weeks in this situation two churches who have never shared a pastor and a
pastor who has never been shared will, through God’s Grace, make it all
work! And because we are aconnectional church… it will continue to
benefit both churches to keep the other one as strong as possible.
I am excitedly looking forward to
starting my ministry in Brewerton and continuing my ministry here in Cicero.God is indeed good, all the time!

Help keep our Church clean!
With the addition of the Conference area
there is now a much larger area to keep clean.Consequently we need everyone’s cooperation & help to keep our
Church looking its best.
Our present Custodian is a full time
employee but half of her time she is the Christian Education Director. To keep within our budget & not hire
additional help many areas will be kept clean with volunteers.
Everyone is asked to make sure their areas
of use are picked up & cleaned up every time after you’re done with your
activity and/or meeting.
Jim Havens has graciously offered to get
volunteers to help keep Fellowship Hall clean. Our Junior & Senior high youth are responsible for their classroom
areas & the Choir is also taking responsibility to clean their new
area. The U.M.W. is going to over see
the kitchen is kept tidy except when groups use it for a specific function.
All
groups using the kitchen and Fellowship Hall are responsible to leave it in the
same or better shape than they found it.Our kitchen is now a bring it in
& take it out facility.DO NOT LEAVE
FOOD IN THE REFRIGERATOR.Others
will throw out anything not labeled and dated for a short term stay only. Please take home what is left over from your
function except if you plan to sell it the next day.
Persons allowing their children to use
classrooms while they are in a meeting are responsible for picking up &
putting away items their children use.
We thank everyone for their cooperation as
this Church belongs to all of us & it’s up to all of us to take care of.

For many years, anyone who became a member
of The United Methodist Church pledged four things to the church:their prayers, their presence, their gifts,
and their service. Then the 2008 General
Conference added one more:their
witness.
It seems to me that the impact of that
addition is rippling through the life of the church. What does it mean to pledge to be a ‘witness’
for Jesus Christ in today’s world?
One answer comes in the form of ‘Change
the World Sunday,’ or ‘Be the Church Sunday,’ or ‘Don’t (Just) Go to Church
Sunday.’Whatever you call it, this idea
has caught on across United Methodism, and more and more churches, districts,
and conferences are adopting the idea of a Sunday when instead of business as
usual, the membership scatter out into the community and do service projects as
a way of witnessing for the love of God.We did it last year, and it was a great day.(See the announcement for May 15 this
year.)
Another answer comes from our Bishop
Marcus Matthews, who challenged everyone to witness for our faith by bringing
at least one person to Christ this year.
Responding to this challenge in our
church, over 75 individuals brought forward prayer cards indicating their
intent to share their faith.A few weeks
later, over 45 brought forward cards celebrating their actual faith-sharing
experiences.It was a powerful
representation of living out our vow to witness for our faith.
Jack and I wanted to bring strong
preaching support to this project.Our
sermons over the first two months of 2011 focused on the who, what, when,
where, and how of sharing our faith stories. For Lent, we turned our attention to the central Person in our story,
Jesus Christ, and how he empowered people to let go of old baggage, and embrace
a new story – the Good News of the Kingdom
of God.
In May, we turn our attention to taking
our story out into the world, and putting it into action. The themes of the Sundays make this an ideal
move:taking the Story
--into our United Methodist
connection (our May 1 celebration of our Conference relationship),
--into our homes (May 8 – Mother’s
Day),
--into our community (May 15 – Change
the World Sunday)
--into new generations(May 22 – Children’s Day)
--into our nation (May 29 – Memorial
Day)
These should be exciting and rewarding
Sundays. How blessed we are to be
gathered into this wonderful Body of Christ, Cicero UMC.
Christ is Risen! You are a witness.
In Christ, Everett

Discipleship Book Review
Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters by Dr. Meg Meeker
What is
the role of a father in raising daughters? Fathers, especially those new to the
role, are frequently at a loss. Fathers of boys have experience to fall back
on- we were once boys, and can likely recall our own trials, tribulations, and
the sorts of guidance we needed. We have at least lived through the emotions,
thoughts, and motivations of what drives a boy through adolescence and beyond.
But a girl? Fathers obviously lack the
experience
of having been one.
I
recently concluded the book Strong
Fathers, Strong Daughters, by Dr. Meg Meeker. Dr. Meeker lays out the
daunting hurdles facing a girl in today’s society must clear. She discusses
self image, eating disorders, peer relationships, boyfriends, premarital sex,
parental relations, and emotional issues. Throughout the text there is guidance
of what fathers can and should do. Through anecdotes, stories of patients and
statistics, Meeker lays out strategies to help raise our daughters into the
women we hope they can be.
I cannot
tell you the book answers every situation or concern- for me it raised concern
in areas I had given no thought to. I may have been more comfortable in my role
as a father to a daughter before I read the book; certainly I was more
confident when I was more ignorant of what lay ahead. While the book lacks
every answer, it gives a route to success any father can provide regardless of
their daughter’s age: talk to her, give her time and love, and live the traits
you want to see in her, and she will grow into someone strong in character,
love and faith.

Teams’ Annual Silent Auction of Goodie Baskets
The Mission Team will be holding its Annual Silent Auction of Goodie Baskets again this year, from Sunday May 15th
through Sunday May 22nd. Baskets will be displayed in
the Welcome Center and bids accepted on both
Sundays. Winners will be notified after the 10:45 service on May 22nd
and baskets can be picked up after that.
The purpose of the auction is to raise additional funds for the three Mission
Work Trips our church is involved with this summer---to Appalachia, Sabine Pass, TX, and Zimbabwe.
We have asked the many groups in our church to create a basket of goodies based
on a theme (Summer Fun, Bucket O’ Tools, Feed the Birds,
Gardening, Emergency Car Care, Barbeque, Pamper Yourself, Movie Night, Picnic
Time, etc.).
Individuals, also, are welcome to contribute a basket if they wish.
We ask that baskets be brought to the church by Saturday, May 14th
and placed on the tables provided in the back right corner of the Welcome Center. If you are able to donate
a basket it would be VERY helpful for you to provide a list of the items it
contains, a named theme & approximate value of the goodies it
contains.

Pastor April 2011
“Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch
as you did it to one of the least of these
My brethren, you did it to
Me.”Matthew 25:40 NKJV
You may not realize it, but it is extremely selfish to go
around always dwelling on your problems, always thinking about what you want or
need, and hardly noticing the many needs of others all around you.One of the best things you can do if you’re
having a problem is to help solve somebody else’s problem. If you want your dreams to come to pass, help
someone else fulfill his or her dreams.Start sowing some seeds so God can bring you a harvest.
Perhaps you feel like you have nothing to give.Sure you do!You can give a smile or a hug.You can do some small but meaningful task to help someone. You can visit someone in the hospital or make
a meal for a person who is shut in.You
can write an encouraging letter or card.Somebody needs what you have to share.Somebody needs your friendship.God created us to be free, but he didn’t make us to function as “Lone
Rangers.”We need one another.
GOD WILL NOT FILL A CLOSED FIST WITH GOOD THINGS!
(reprinted from Joel Osteen’s Your Best
Life Now)
I’ve read this little book a few times and each time I
find another pearl of wisdom to consider. When we reach out to other people in need, God will make sure that our
own needs are met.If you’re down and
discouraged, get your mind off yourself, and go help meet someone else’s
need.Sow the seed that will bring you a
harvest. After all, we were created to
give, not simply to please ourselves.
As we move through Lent and toward the Cross and the empty
tomb of Resurrection, look around and see where there are opportunities to meet
someone else’s needs.The entire world
will be better off because of it!Amen!
I can’t wait to see you in Church!

Discipleship
“Connecting With God”
A
few years ago I participated in a men’s study group
here at Cicero
using the spiritual formation guide,
“Connecting With God,” which I found very helpful. Written by Lynda L.
Graybeal and Julia L. Roller and published by HarperCollins in 2006, twelve
chapters suggest twelve ways, or disciplines, to help us connect with God.
We
think of prayer as a primary way of communicating with God. But for some,
prayer seems a one way street and have trouble “hearing” a response from
God. This book teaches us how to “listen” to God. Though designed
for small study groups of seven or less, it is
also a valuable resource for individuals.
The format of seven brief sections is the
same for each chapter. It begins with a Devotional from another
source (one of its strengths), then a “My Life-With-God Exercise” to be
practiced each day for the next week (an essential element to benefit fully
from this book). Set aside the book to practice the exercise.
The
book continues with a Scripture reading and commentary on the reading, “Getting
the Picture.”
The
following three sections, Going Deeper, Pointing to God and Going
Forward, wrap up the theme of the chapter. There is even a “Taking
it Further” section at the end if one wants to explore a particular theme
further.
You
probably would find some themes more to your liking than others, but it is
valuable to at least be exposed to them all and continue practicing those found
most helpful.
There is a copy of the book in the office. “Good
adventuring!” --Warren Covell
Reading Program Books
Arrive
There are five new books available in our Pink Lounge for anyone to borrow and read.
They are part of the United Methodist Women
2011 Reading Program offerings; one in each category. Getting to
the Heart of Interfaith, by Mackenzie, Falcon and Rahman; the
Education for Mission group; Half the Sky,
by Kristof and WuDunn; in Leadership Development;
Weaving: A Just Futurefor Children, by Olson and Friedrich; in
Nurturing for Community; The True Cost of Low Prices: The
Violence of Globalization by Vincent Gallagher;
in Social Action; and Just Choose Happiness: a
Guide to Joyous Living, by Nell Mohney; in Spiritual Growth group.
There is a card inside each book which we ask you sign and date and place in
the file box that is near the books. In this way we can learn who has the
book. Then we can contact you so that the book can be passed along to
another who would like to read it. If you would like to know more
about the reading program, take a brochure from the ring
binder on the book shelf or talk to Jackie Robbins or Elaine Mount.

A couple years ago, Sharon and I were
visiting New York City
with some friends (Steve and Jeannie). We were on the subway heading to Ground Zero.I will never forget that subway ride.
There was a small circle of young adults
on the train, and two of them had just witnessed something that was very
important to them – something about a snub of a friend by another youth.
A young woman of about sixteen or
seventeen was telling this story, and she was so engaging and so passionate
that everybody in that crowded car was aware of what was going on.
She didn’t care who was listening in; she
didn’t care how loud her voice got.At
one point, the other witness tried to fill in a detail, and this young woman
actually poked the friend in the chest with both hands and said sharply, “No, I’m telling it!”
Her animated presentation continued, and
we were disappointed when our stop came up, and we weren’t able to stay and
listen to more.We didn’t care so much
how the story turned out – we were just mesmerized by the story-teller.
Later, we all agreed that this episode was
one of the highlights of the trip.We
also agreed that if this young woman doesn’t become a preacher or a
motivational speaker, then she has missed her calling.
And finally, we mused together – Wouldn’t
it be wonderful if we were nearly as passionate about sharing our love for
Jesus Christ?
God bless
you – Everett
Sharing
the Best News – a
Bible study for Lent
Five Sunday
nights -- March 20-April 17, 7:00 P.M. (Child care available)
Facilitator – Everett Bassett
“A friend is going through a tough
time. She is questioning why God has
deserted her.I wish I knew what to say
to her.”
“The young boy next door looks so aimless
and lost.He seems to have no
faith-direction.No sense that anyone
cares.What can I do?”
“My family seems to be drifting away from
God.I see it hurting them, and wish
that I knew how to reach out to them.”
“I am really
discouraged about how people represent Christian faith.Threatening to burn the Qur’an?Holding up obnoxious posters in the name of
Jesus? There has to be a better way.”
There IS a better way.We Christians have just grown rusty in
sharing our faith in genuine, loving ways.
This Bible study is about the witnesses of
the best news the world has ever known – the Gospel of Jesus Christ – finding
our voices again.
Sharing faith is not mysterious. It is not spooky or technical or
offensive. It is natural and basic to
who we are.
When
something great happens, we want to tell somebody; let’s learn how to do that
appropriately and passionately.It could
change your life, and the life of someone around you as well. Come and join us.
Ten
“Pearls of Wisdom”
On
January 2nd, I offered some “impromptu” sermon thoughts about John
1:1-18.After the service many of you
requested copies of my sermon, but unfortunately, when preaching only from
notes, there are no copies to be had.You can go to our church’s web site, www.ciceroumc.com
to listen to the audio version of my thoughts. If you haven’t tried using that format, I encourage you to do so.It’s really easy and every Sunday’s sermon is
available (usually byMonday morning),
thanks to Lee Mount.
I can also offer you these “notes”
I reminisced that 16 years ago, on
January 2nd 1995, I was admitted to St. Joe’s Hospital suffering
from streptococcal pneumonia.I briefly
described some of my experiences during that period and then offered you these
“10 Pearls of Wisdom” (thanks again Lee for the title!).All 10 were important for me to learn and, I
think, can be found somewhere in the John 1: 1-18 lesson……..
1.God
is good, all the time. Thanks to Bishop Fisher for always reminding
us of this, as well!Even when things
aren’t going as we would like them, God remains good to God’s children.
2.Evil
cannot overcome the powerful combination of a stubborn spouse, an excellent Pulmonologist,
wonderful nurses, and a community of praying Christians at home.Nothing more needs to be said here….. God answers our
prayers!
3.Darkness
cannot overcome the Light. The powerful force of evil can always
be defeated by the even more powerful force of God’s light!
4.We
cannot make deals with God, but we can choose to change the orientation of our
lives at any time.At New Years we call them resolutions,
but any day can be the start of a “new year” for Christians.God gives us the chance to start “anew” every
day!
5.God
gives the right to be God’s children to those who choose to believe in God’s
name.Being a child of God has wonderful rights and
God gives those rights to all those who choose to believe in his name. What a great benefit that is for us all.
6.Like
John, each of us is called to testify to others about God.Choosing to remain silent about sharing our faith is no choice at
all. Each of us has the responsibility
to tell others about our wonderful God.
7.Only
because of God’s grace do we receive blessings. The world doesn’t
owe you a living, a happy life, a wonderful family or anything else! Those blessings come only from God.Please don’t fall into the trap of thinking
they come from anywhere else!
8.While
Moses gave the law, grace and truth only come through Jesus.Don’t make the all too common mistake of confusing the law with
grace.Choosing to live only by the law
will leave you feeling empty and alone. We are a grace-driven people.Celebrate that grace and then choose to live by the law.The whole world will be a much better place
when grace-filled Christian people, choose to live by the law.
9.While
no one has ever seen God, God still makes God’s self known.Very few people ever have the experience of seeing the neon lighted,
arrow sign saying “Go here!”to direct
their every move.So many people “see”
God at work in their lives after looking back at where they’ve been and then
realizing, “Wow, I wasn’t ever really alone!”But God still makes God’s self known.
10.Life
is a lot more fun when lived in the Light, not in the dark! The world is filled with people whose only perspective is from being in
the dark, but we will all have an awful lot more fun when we spend time in the
Light!God wants us all to be people of
the Light. And, boy is it fun, when we
choose to be in the Light!
Now, it seems to me that God calls each of us be carriers
of the Light, from today forward.
Can’t wait to see you in church! –

Dear
Friends,
I am writing to tell you about a
benefit that is coming up which my family and I are involved with. It is for my
long time trainer and friend from KellyLyn, BobbieJo Wilson.
BobbieJo was elated to find out during
the summer that she was pregnant with her second child, only to find out a very
short time later that she has stage 2 breast cancer. As you can imagine, this has been a very
difficult time for BobbieJo and her family. She is also a substitute bus driver for North Syracuse Schools but had
not yet become permanent, which meant she did not qualify for health
benefits.As a result, this devastating
diagnosis also means financial hardships as well.
The benefit is Saturday February 5
from 12 – 6 at Jacke’s Grape ‘n Grog restaurant in Brewerton.Tickets are $15. Even if you don’t think you
can attend but would like to make a donation, it’s the perfect opportunity.
Please let me know if you are interested in buying tickets, or making any kind
of donation to the cause.
BobbieJo is a wonderful young woman,
just a bit older than my daughter Shennen. She was very reluctant to have anyone do this for her because it is so
very hard to be on the receiving end of something like this. With much persuasion from her friends, she
agreed.
Please see me if you have questions or
would like to buy tickets, or whatever. I know that there are so many places
seeking money that I understand if you aren’t able to buy tickets or
donate.I would only ask that you keep
BobbieJo and her family in your prayers, for healing and for the birth of a
healthy baby. I believe strongly that prayer is the greatest gift she can
receive from anyone, and it is the strength of that faith which will heal her
and give her the courage and strength she needs to walk through this
journey.Thank you for taking the time
to read this message, I appreciate it from the bottom of my heart.
Sincerely,
Lori
Janisch

The start of another new year offers
us, once again, the chance to consider where it is we’re at and where it is
we’re heading on this journey we have come to call life.We get all wrapped up in resolutions to
change, re-direct, turn over a new leaf, and adjust the course our life seems
to be taking.
I read about a man named Jeff Ferrera
of Illinois, who, as few years ago, was
reconciling his checkbook and called First National Bank of Chicago to get his current balance. The electronic voice droned on and finally
said, “Your primary checking account currently has a balance of
$924,844,204.32.”Ferrera was one of 826
customers who were almost billionaires for a day as the result of the biggest
banking error in the history of US banking. The bank’s goof amounted to almost $764 billion, more than six times the
assets of the First National Bank.“It
had a lot of people saying in jest to transfer it to the Cayman
Islands and make a run for it,” Ferrera said. But, like most others, he simply reported the
error to bank officials, who could only say it was a result of a computer
programming error.
How ridiculous it would have been for
Ferrera to place any confidence in his new found wealth. He recognized the temporary nature of his
millionaire checking account.It would
have been utter stupidity for him to make plans and re-arrange his life around
something so uncertain and so fleeting.
Yet, that’s exactly the way most of us
operate.We’re given these brief
life-spans and rather than focus on the things that really matter, we squander
our time, thoughts and talents on the trivial.God tells us to reach for the eternal but we settle for the
temporary.
So, I encourage you, as you think
about the new direction you might want to try taking in the New Year, to reach
out for the eternal.I encourage you to
remember Jesus words from the Book of Matthew, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness…..”
Together we can make 2011 the best
year ever!Because with our God, truly
the best is still yet to come for us all!
I can’t
wait to see you in Church,
Pastor
Jack Keating

"Introducing Islam"
An eight week study introducing Islam begins Sunday evening,
January 9th, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the church. The study book
being used is God Is One: The Way of
Islam by R. Marston Speight ($9.50), available at the Welcome Center desk. Warren Covell and
Patt Carpenter guide the sessions.
We
offer this study because: 1) Islam is one of the three great Abrahamic religions about which most of us know very
little. 2) There is so much misinformation about Islam floating
around, especially post 9/11. 3) Muslims are our neighbors, fellow human
beings who seek from life what you and I seek (there are at least 2.5 million
Muslim Americans).
On
February 20, Ms. Danya Wellmon, a Muslim, will be our guest to share her
reflections and respond to questions generated from previous sessions. Danya is a founding member of central NY's Women Transcending Boundaries, an
organization that began as a conversation over coffee between Danya and United
Methodist Betsy Wiggins shortly after 9/11/01 and has developed into an
organization of 50-60 women from many different faith communities dedicated to
better cultural understanding.
Discipleship Minute
A few months back I was standing in the book store looking
at the religious section, feeling I needed something to jump-start my prayer
life.I really didn’t know what I was
looking for.
So I give God all the credit for steering
my eye, and then my hand, to a single small paperback book that was bashfully
tucked between the bigger and more numerous volumes.
It is entitled The Only Necessary Thing,
by Henri J. M. Nouwen, Compiled and Edited by Wendy Wilson Greer.
Through his honest and penetrating
spiritual writings, Henri Nouwen has been one of my prayer-mentors over the
years, as he has been for millions of others.I thought I had read almost all of his books, so this one I hadn’t heard
of surprised me.
What a great surprise.Wendy Greer has read through all of Nouwen’s
writings and gleaned hundreds of brief pearls of spiritual wisdom, most of them
one or two paragraphs. She has organized
them into fifteen sections, with titles like Desire, Solitude, The Holy Spirit,
Belovedness, Listening, and so on.The
result is this beautiful devotional book.
Each
of these readings takes about 2-4 minutes, but without fail gives me some new
idea about my journey with Christ.I
have found that I want to start every day with one of these brief teachings,
and let it lead me into a time of fellowship with God.
A
brief sample:yesterday (12/19), before
going to church, I read, “The discipline of community makes us persons… who are
sounding through to each other… a truth, a beauty, and a love which are
greater, fuller, and richer than we ourselves can grasp. In true community we are windows constantly
offering each other new views on the mystery of God’s presence in our lives.”
With that in mind, I then went to church
services and was amazed at the beautiful ‘windows’ God used to shine His love
through in our Cicero faith-community.
Again and again I have been blessed by
this book, and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a new resource for
your prayer life.
I’m not sure how readily available it is
in local book stores (I bought the only copy I found.)But Amazon has several copies available
(along with many more glowing reviews.)
God bless
-- Everett
Long Players Needed
On Sunday, January 9th, following the
second service the LPs are needed to help take down the Christmas
decorations and store them away. Many hands make quick work of the
job. Please come if you can. Bring a bag lunch. We should be
finished before 2 o'clock. On Thursday, January
13 at 1 p.m., we will have a meeting to plan events in
2011 for our older adult group. We want to have a balance of
service projects, informational programs and activities that are fun to do
together. Please feel free to join us for this with any ideas or
suggestions. [ Any Snow Birds who would like to make suggestions can e-mail
them to the Mounts:

Community Outreach Program
Over
the last few years our church has broadened its mission activities from local concerns
to far away places such as Sabine Pass and Zimbabwe. This mission work has
helped people and certainly has touched the hearts of those who were involved.
This
Fall it has come to our attention that children in our own backyard are in
need. We have heard stories of elementary school children who are missing
school on repeated occasions due to head lice because their family cannot
afford the lice kits. Many families cannot afford dental care so their children
cannot concentrate on their school work because of tooth pain. Children are
attending school without socks and underwear. Older children are being rejected
by their peers because they lack hygiene items. Right here in our neighborhood
there are homeless teenagers struggling to attend school.
Social
workers and school nurses are doing a heroic job of identifying these children
and offering assistance however it is limited. Our church has made a commitment
to help these children in our own neighborhood by partnering with the school
nurses and social workers.
Our
plan:
1.
Collect hygiene items such has deodorant, body sprays, toothbrushes,
toothpaste, chap stick, lip gloss, and hand cream.
2.
Collect school supplies.
3.
Lice kit distribution through a voucher.
4.
Collect winter hats and gloves.
5.
Develop a program to assist with dental concerns.
6.
Collect socks and underwear for elementary children.
7.
Have gift certificates available to homeless children to local stores.
8.
We will provide storage space for the above supplies.
What
can you do?
*During
Change the World Sunday some members of our congregation made a connection with
the Can-Teen. One a month a meal is being coordinated by our church. Contact
Diane Ilacqua ( 458-5501) if you would like to help. This is a great chance to
talk to the youth of our community.
*
Provide some of the supplies listed above in our designed location in our
church.

are still developing several aspects of this program. The need is there and we
are blessed to be situated that we can make a difference in a child’s life.
