The congregation of the Cicero United Methodist Church is committed to providing a safe and secure environment for all children, youth and volunteers who participate in ministries and activities sponsored by the church.
Liaisons Re: Sexual Harassment

- Mike Irwin - 682-3135
The following policy statements reflect our congregation’s commitment to preserving this church as a holy place of safety and protection for all who would enter and as a place in which all people can experience the love of God through relationships with others.
- The SPRC will oversee this policy including all record keeping and as necessary screening and training.
- All volunteers planning to work with children and youth will be asked to fill out a volunteer application. After screening and acceptance they will sign the Participation Covenant.
- No one who has been convicted of child abuse (either sexual abuse, physical abuse, or emotional abuse) may volunteer to work with children or youth in any church-sponsored activity.
- The SPRC will screen any volunteers who indicate being convicted of a crime (other than listed in #3) as to their eligibility to volunteer.
- All volunteers involved with children or youth of our church must be affiliated with the congregation for at least six months before beginning a volunteer assignment. Anyone who has been affiliated with another church for the past six months can submit a letter of recommendation from that church to be considered as a volunteer.
- Volunteers working with children and youth shall observe the “Two-Adult Rule” and or an open door policy at all times so that no adult is intentionally alone with children or youth.
- Volunteers working with children and youth shall attend regular training and educational events provided by the church to keep volunteers informed of church policies and state laws regarding child abuse.
- Volunteers shall immediately report to their supervisor and or the local sexual harassment contact person or designated annual conference personnel, any behavior that seems abusive or inappropriate.
- Survivors of child abuse need the love and support of our congregation. Any survivor who desires to volunteer in some capacity to work with children or youth is encouraged to discuss his/her willingness with one of our church’s pastors before accepting an assignment.
- There will be a fair and discreet investigation of all alleged incidents of sexual abuse or inappropriateness.
